Beavers enjoyed their first hike of the year, walking along the foreshore from Hessle to North Ferriby. We couldn’t have picked a nicer evening for the walk, although a little misty, the setting sun was a huge bright orange ball in the sky.

Waka Waka!
For a part of the International Activity badge, Beavers have to learn a song, play a game or perform a dance from another country. As we met on ‘Africa Scout Day’ we learnt the “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” dance, which draws inspiration from traditional African music and blends an African Colombian rhythm with a…
Welcome to Beavers
We have invested four new Beavers and a Leader into our section this term. Welcome to Jude, Neo, Toby, Zachary and Malak!
Disability Awareness
Beavers enjoyed a talk from Richard who works at Guide Dogs. We learnt about how guide dogs assist people, how they are trained and cared for and the equipment used. We also learnt about the different types of eye sight problems people can have by trying on some special glasses.
Sleeping with the sharks!
Cherokee Cubs and Hessle Beavers enjoyed a night at The Deep. They started with a tour and talk from knowledgeable guides, completed some craft activities, and then got to sleep alongside the fish tanks. We completed the event with breakfast overlooking the Humber and a visit to see the penguins! Many completed their first ever…
Rock Up
Beavers ended the autumn term with a visit to Rock Up, where many of them reached the dizzy heights of the top of the walls. We had a few try the stairway to heaven, with several successes – Beavers, Young Leader and Leader (we’ll let you guess which one!). At the end of the evening…
Chief Scout Bronze Award
Congratulations to six of our Beavers, Daniel, Daniel, Edward, Isaac, Oscar and William, who have achieved their Chief Scout Bronze Award. Many of these Beavers had their first experiences of scouting on Zoom during lockdowns. We finally met them face to face in April 2021, and eventually inside the scout den in September, so big…
Kindness in the Community
Beavers have been making Christmas decorations. They had four to make and could choose to take two home for their own tree. We had planned to go carol singing in the care homes this year, but that wasn’t to be, so instead our other decorations will be distributed to all the local care homes, along…
Remembrance Sunday 2021
Well done to those that represented Hessle Scout Group at the Community Remembrance Service in Hessle, and those that represented Blacktoft Beacon Explorers in Beverley. Your contributions to the services were complemented by many.
Gruffalo Trail
Beavers practiced their orienteering skills a little more with a visit to Dalby Forest to complete the Gruffalo Trail. We found the Gruffalo, snake, mouse and fox hidden in the woods, as well as lots of mud. We also did some leaf and bark rubbing as well as working out how old some of the…
Orienteering in the Park
Beavers always ask why they need a torch in their rucksack, so we went on a hike so that they could use them – orienteering around Peter Pan Park in the dark! As it was the last week of term we also presented lots of badges.
Recycle the Recycling
Beavers love an evening with a pile of junk. As part of the Builder activity badge, their challenge was to create a vehicle that was able to transport a small plastic ball. Lots of imagination was used and some creative ideas for storing the ball. Thanks to all our parents for recycling the leftovers!
Welcome to Beavers
We’ve invested lots of new Beavers this term, welcome to Albie, Freddie, Harry, Jesse, Joshua, Leo.
Speedy Cyclists
As part of our cyclist badge, Rusty demonstrated how to pump our bicycle tyres, Keeo and Malak checked everyone was wearing their helmet correctly and a hi-viz jacket, and then we managed to cycle and scooter across the Humber Bridge and back in record time. We had some fantastic sunset views on the way back….
Apples!
Beavers loved their visit to Pickering Road Community Orchard. We had a tour of the wildlife garden and woodland walk, we tasted lots of different varieties of apples, saw how mistletoe grows on another tree, had a drink of apple juice, walked the labyrinth, and best of all we got to pick some apples direct…
Humber Rescue
Beavers have been working towards their Safety Activity Badge, and to link with water safety we visited Humber Rescue. The crew shared their knowledge and experience with us, and we got to have a close up look at the boats and the kit they have to wear.
Chief Scout Bronze Award
Whilst visiting Humber Rescue we were delighted to be able to invest new Beaver Lizzie, present Chief Scout Bronze Awards to Summer, Aiden and Alfie, and watch five of our Beavers swim up the river to Cubs. A busy evening!
Raywell Fun Day
Beavers had a great time completing activities towards their Camp Craft Activity badge, alongside some adventurous activities. We put up a tent, made pot bags, had fun in the cavebus, on pedal karts, and orienteering around Raywell Park. We then collected wood, to build and light a fire to cook our tea on. An excellent…
Nut Wood Dens
For part of the Outdoor Challenge badge Beavers have to make something to help animals in the wild. We had a visit to Nut Wood and made minature dens from sticks, moss and leaves for the small animals that live there, such as hedgehogs, squirrels, mice, voles and badgers.
Bugs and Natural Things
Tonight we invested our five new Beavers, welcome to Ben, Iris, Marlarae, Michael and Ryan. Then, as part of their Outdoor Challenge badge Beavers have been making pictures from natural things, firstly a mode of transport, and then an animal. They have also been bug hunting and identifying what they have found.
Fires!
As part of their Adventure Challenge Beavers have enjoyed collecting wood to build a small fire, which they then lit safely using matches, and toasted marshmallows to make smores. Thank you to everyone that saved their biscuit tins for us.
Somewhere under the rainbow!
We had lots of Beavers earning their very first Hikes badge tonight. We went for a walk around the fields near Hessle Mount Farm, with Beavers following the map as part of their Navigator badge. We got a bit wet again, but it was worth it to see the double rainbow.
Rain didn’t stop play!
We may have got a bit wet, but we still had fun! Beavers completed part of their Global Issues badge tonight, making a water filter using a plastic bottle, fabric, cotton wool, sand, stones and muddy water, with some excellent results. We also saw some great teamwork whilst playing chair hockey.
Spring Gardening
Hessle Beavers and Leaders have loved being able to meet face to face in the sunshine. We have started to work towards our Gardener Activity Badge, planting sunflowers and starting a diary to see how they grow, making seed bombs, grass heads, and fat balls for the birds, as well as understanding what different garden…
Chief Scout’s Bronze Award
Congratulations to four Hessle Beavers – Eleanor, Isaac, Libbie and Oscar – who were tonight presented with their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award by our GSL Charlotte. This is the top award for Beavers. It shows that they are adventurous, have helped the local community and learnt about the world. It also means that they have…
Mothering Sunday
Thank you to all our Mums, who have helped us carry on scouting during the last year. In normal times we would have been on church parade this morning, bringing home a small posy of flowers for Mum. We hope all our Beaver Mums like their cards and gifts.
Batterman Saves the Day!
Several of our Beavers had little bits of their Challenge Badges to complete to achieve their Chief Scout Bronze Award, so with a bit of teamwork and a sleepover at home, Batterman and 16 Beaver friends have helped them along the way. We made rafts, decorated and rolled eggs, completed a scavenger hunt, made pancakes…
Welcome to Beavers
Three new Beavers have made their promise and been invested into Hessle Scout Group. Welcome to Daniel, Teddy and William.
Emergency Aid
Beavers practiced their first aid skills this week – cleaning a wound, applying a plaster and a bandage – and then putting someone into the recovery position. Thank you to all our willing patients!
Lego Map Symbols
As part of their Navigator badge, Beavers have been learning map symbols, by making them out of lego bricks. We also looked at a map of Hessle and identified lots of local features, and worked out what we should take in our rucksacks when we can eventually all go on a hike together.
Fire Breathing Dragons!
Beavers loved their talk and demonstration by Liz Million last night. She explained how to draw different types of animals, with differing facial expressions, and we all had a go too with some fantastic results.
Communication
As part of their Communicator Activity Badge Beavers made their own semaphore flags, and practiced spelling out compound words. They have also learnt their phone numbers, solved a simple code and sent the answer to TicTac via text message or Whatsapp.
Christmas Fun
For their last meeting of the term, Beavers made their own Christmas decorations – we painted salt dough shapes, made a snowman star, a bauble, and a special scout decoration to remember our virtual scouting in 2020.
Bronze Chief Scout Award
Congratulations to Joseph on achieving his Bronze Chief Scout Award, and commencing his swim up the river to Cubs.
Welcome to Beavers
Tonight we invested two new Beavers into our colony on zoom. Welcome to Oscar and Isaac (and thanks to mum for the assistance!)
Jingle Bells
Under the excellent guidance of our young leader, Hawkeye, Beavers created music tonight. We used pots, pans, wooden spoons and our hands along with any instruments we had in our own home. By the end of the session we were all experts at playing along to Jingle Bells. Well done to Joseph completing his Personal…
Leaf Art
As part of their world challenge badge, Beavers took part in some leaf art activities. After gathering leaves and sticks whilst out on their daily walk, first they made hedgehog pictures, and then lots of other animals from leaves. We then made stick men, which involved practicing to tie a reef knot whilst making their…
World Challenge
Beavers have been working towards their world challenge badge this term. For ‘take part in an activity from another country’ we learnt about the festival of Diwali. We made our own diyas from saltdough, and Beavers lit their own candle in them, as part of their skills challenge badge. We then made rangloi art using…
Creative Explosions
Beavers had fun making their own firework displays. Firstly we iced biscuits and then painted pictures, using our skill to roll a marble around the paper to create the display. Thanks also to parents for assisting in investing three of our Beavers via zoom. Well done Alistair, Edward and Frankie.
Apple Crumble!
A couple weeks ago we had a talk from Yvette at Pickering Road Orchard, about how apple trees grow through each season. This week we saw some excellent cooking skills by our Beavers. Young people used vegetable peelers and knives, rubbed butter into flour, and produced some brilliant apple crumbles. We hope they all tasted…
Fun in the Orchard
For their first face to face meeting, half of our Beaver Colony met at Raywell Park to undertake a scavenger hunt and have some fun on the go-karts. It was great to be back together again, and we’re looking forward to seeing the other half of the colony next week.
Zoom Investitures
Another first for Hessle Beavers took place this week, when we invested six of our new members during our Zoom meeting. Thanks to parents for their assistance with presenting the neckers, certificates and badges.
Chief Scout Bronze Award
Hessle Beavers made history this week in presenting eight Chief Scout Awards via Zoom! Charlotte, our GSL, joined us to make the presentations virtually, and big thanks to all the parents for their assistance. Congratulations to Luke, Archie, Jesse, Rowan, Joshua, Jessica, Amelie and Rosie on their achievements. We also presented lots of other badges…
Constellations
What do you do when you can’t all go outside and look at the stars together for the Space Badge – you make constellations out of iced gems and strawberry laces instead! Well done Beavers!
Zoom into Space!
Beavers held their first weekly meeting via Zoom and we worked towards our Space badge. We talked about the planets, the moon and astronaut Tim Peake, made our own picture of the solar system, recreated it from spherical shaped items found in our homes, and a toilet roll middle rocket!
Beavers 2020 Lockdown Sleepover
Beavers had a fun packed weekend at their Lockdown Sleepover. We had a scavenger hunt, learnt about maps and what to take on a hike, made bird feeders, toilet roll superheroes and our own crazy golf course, as well as the usual camp activities of cooking our own food, singing campfire songs and playing bingo.
The Great Outdoors
Even though we can’t go very far, for very long, young people are still enjoying time outdoors. Well done to Beavers Aiden, Alfie and Joey, Cubs Henry and Jesse and Scouts Caitlin and Catriona. We particularly liked the VE day street campfire!
Camping at home
Lots of our young people are enjoying camping at home, either building dens in the house or in tents in the garden. Well done to Beavers Jessica, Joseph, Aiden, Isaac and Amelie and Cubs Caleb and Theo.
VE Day 75
Lots of brilliant pictures of both young people and leaders taking part in VE Day activities at home.
Camp at Home
We may not be able to go camping at the moment, but lots of our young people have found ways to make dens and camp at home. Well done to Beavers Luke and Summer, Cherokees Bradley, Jack, Fraser and Harrison, Arapaho Jessica and Navajo Ewan. If you’ve been camping at home, send us your pictures.
